Other Helpful Hints | Tell
Them You're Moving
After you choose your move date, contact the following people where you
currently live and in advance of moving to your new neighborhood, for
the smoothest transition possible.
Family
& Friends
The most important people should know first. Be sure to sit down with
your family and make a list of all friends and relatives so no one is
left out.
Newspaper - Trash Collector - Post
Office
Be sure to give a forwarding address. Your post office carries the forms
you need to notify other people by mail. Certain types of mail will not
be forwarded unless you specifically request the post office to do so.
Check with them to become aware of any restrictions, etc.
Bank
Arrange for transfer of your account and contents of safety deposit box
to a bank in your new neighborhood. Order your new checks
ahead of time if possible.
Schools
Have school records transferred to the new school(s). You can contact
the American School Directory at www.asd.com for facts about local schools
in your new area.
Child Care
Contact Child Care Aware at 800-424-2246 or on the web at www.naccrra.net
for information on locating quality child care in your new neighborhood.
Medical
Be sure to call your doctor, your dentist, and your pharmacy. Ask each
of them for referrals
in your new area. Obtain
copies of your records from each
one, or have them prepare to transfer your records as soon as you secure
new providers.
Veterinarian
If you have pets, be sure to contact your vet for referrals and to have
those records transferred also. Or call the American Animal Hospital Association
at 800-883-6301 or www.healthy pet.com for help on locating veterinarians
near your new home. Make yourself aware of license and local pet ordinances
in your new area.
Library
Make sure you return any outstanding books. An overdue fine can be most
unwelcome.
Utilities
Contact all utilities and give
them your service cut-off date. Depending on the distance of your move,
they may simply transfer service. If not, be sure you request any deposits
you may have made to be refunded to you at your new address. It is best
to have all utilities turned on at your new address a day or two before
you move if possible.
For telephone services, contact your new phone company as far as a month
in advance to secure your new phone number.

Insurance Providers
It is very important that your insurance providers are informed of your
move. Be sure they confirm that your new location is covered immediately.
Also, that your vehicles will be housed at a new address.
Government Agencies
Last but certainly not least, be sure to let Uncle Sam know where he can
reach you. Call the Internal Revenue Service at 800-829-1040 or on the
web at www.irs.ustreas.gov.
Also, if you receive Social Security benefits, call the Social Security
Administration at 800-772-1213 or on the web at www.ssa.gov.
